What We Build

Designed Around Your Needs

There is usually a moment when it becomes clear that something needs to change. A layout that made sense when you moved in but has not worked for years. Countertops that have seen better decades. A space designed for a different family living a different life. Maybe the issue is functional. Maybe it is purely aesthetic. Most of the time it is both.

The question DC homeowners keep coming back to is always some version of the same thing: how do you get a kitchen that actually fits the way you live without turning your home into a construction site for longer than it needs to be? It is a fair question, and one with a real answer.

The answer is the design-build model. When your architect and your contractor are the same team, working from the same plan and accountable to the same outcome, the gap between what was designed and what gets built disappears. No miscommunications between separate firms. No finger-pointing when something does not line up. One team, one process, one finished kitchen that looks exactly like what you agreed to at the start.

How It Works

What a Well-Designed Kitchen Takes

The details that separate a well-designed kitchen from one that just looks good in photos are not always obvious until you are living in the finished space.

Is the workflow between the refrigerator, prep area, and stove actually logical or does it just look balanced on paper? Is there enough storage that the counters stay clear, or does everything end up stacked in the wrong place? Does the lighting work for cooking at seven in the morning, not just for the listing photos?

We think about all of it:

  • Layout and workflow designed around how you actually cook, not how kitchens are supposed to look
  • Custom and semi-custom cabinetry built for the specific dimensions of your space
  • Countertop material selection across granite, quartz, butcher block, and polished concrete
  • Lighting plans that account for task, ambient, and natural light together
  • Appliance integration so nothing looks like an afterthought
  • Storage solutions built into the design from the start, not added at the end
  • Rowhome-specific configurations including galley layouts, L-shaped designs, and open-plan conversions for narrow DC footprints

Washington DC kitchens come with real constraints. An eighteen-foot-wide rowhome in Capitol Hill is a fundamentally different project than a detached home in the suburbs. Condo kitchens bring building approval processes and shared system considerations that most contractors have never navigated. Historic properties add preservation requirements on top of everything else. We work regularly in Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Logan Circle, Kalorama, and across the District, and we know how to design beautiful kitchens inside all of it.

Why Blue Star

The Right Team Makes All the Difference

A luxury kitchen renovation involves more coordination than almost any other room in the house. Layout, cabinetry, appliances, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, and lighting all have to work together as a single cohesive system. Getting it right requires a team that resolves all of it before a single cabinet gets ordered.

We are an Architect-Led Design Build firm, and on a kitchen renovation that distinction matters. When the architect and builder are the same team, the design is shaped by what is actually buildable within your existing footprint and budget from day one. Our process is built around three things: Lifestyle Driven Design, Craftsmanship with Architectural Details, and a Transparent Process.

Lifestyle Driven Design

A kitchen should work around how you actually cook, entertain, and move through the space, not the other way around. We start by understanding your workflow, your storage needs, and how the kitchen connects to the rest of your home before anything gets drawn or specified.

Craftsmanship & Quality Details

A well-designed kitchen is only as good as how it is built. We are deliberate about cabinetry construction, stone selection, appliance integration, and every detail that determines whether the finished space performs the way it should ten years from now as much as it impresses on day one.

A Transparent Process

Kitchen renovations in older DC homes often involve plumbing relocations, electrical upgrades, and structural considerations when walls come down. We assess what you have before design is finalized and keep you informed at every step so the budget and timeline reflect reality from the start.

Let’s Talk About Your Kitchen

We do not do high-pressure consultations. Honestly, they are mostly us asking a lot of questions and being upfront about what is realistic for your specific kitchen, your home, and your budget.

Some clients come in with a clear vision and just need a team that can execute it. Others are starting from scratch and want to understand what is actually possible in the space they have. Either way, you leave with a clearer picture than you came in with, including a realistic sense of what the project involves and what it will take to get there.

If you are thinking about a custom kitchen remodel in Washington DC and are not sure where to start, that is exactly the right time to call.

Custom Kitchen Remodel FAQs

What is the design-build model and why does it matter for a kitchen remodel?

Design-build means your designer and your contractor are the same team. That matters because the gap between what gets designed and what gets built is where most kitchen remodels run into trouble. Cost overruns, miscommunications, and finishes that do not match the original plan are almost always the result of two separate firms working from different assumptions. One team, one process, one outcome.

How is a DC rowhome kitchen different from a standard remodel?

Narrow footprints, shared walls, multi-story layouts, and in many cases historic preservation requirements make DC rowhome kitchens a specific discipline. Layout decisions that work in a wide suburban home do not always translate to an eighteen-foot-wide rowhome. We design specifically for these constraints rather than applying a generic solution to a space that deserves better.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel in Washington DC?

Almost always, yes. Electrical, plumbing, and structural changes each require permits through the DC Department of Buildings. If your home is in a historic district, additional review may be required. We handle all permitting from the start so it does not slow your project down.

A kitchen remodel is one of the most personal projects a homeowner can take on. It is the room where the day starts and where people end up at the end of it. When it does not work, you feel it every single morning. When it does, you wonder why you waited so long. Blue Star Design Build brings award-winning design and construction expertise to custom kitchen remodels across Washington DC, with one team managing everything from the first sketch to the final walkthrough.

We serve DC exclusively. That focus matters because kitchens in this city are not generic projects. They live inside rowhomes with narrow footprints, condos with building approvals and shared systems, and historic properties with preservation requirements that a general contractor outside the District has never had to think about. We have been solving exactly these problems for a long time. Not just remodeling kitchens. Designing them.
